Effective sex positive parenting is an ongoing journey, not a destination. Whether it involves learning sex ed knowledge you didn’t receive, unlearning harmful myths and stereotypes, unpacking shame, or healing trauma, parents
and caregivers can be more effective mentors
for young people when they nurture their own
sexual health as well.
Learning about bodies, consent, relationships, and sexual health are critical components to living informed, safer, more satisfying lives. Unfortunately, we cannot rely solely on schools to teach our children these vital skills; it has
to be a holistic approach that is early
and ongoing and that begins at home. Providing young people with sexuality education that is comprehensive, inclusive, medically accurate, and sex positive is a pathway to get there.
Asking about sex education can be challenging for both parents and teenagers, but understanding why
it can be difficult for parents can help make these conversations easier
and more effective.
